Mailing list for technical support created

As the project audience has exceeded the initial expectations, and technical support request were getting more and more frequent, the need for us to have a place where everyone (including, but not limited to, the contributors) could help other users solve their problems arose. The mail form you used to find there has been therefore removed, and we’ve rolled up a mailing list?, located at

virtualboximage-support at lists.sourceforge.net

to which you can subscribe by clicking here. Subscription is needed if you want to post requests; mailing list archives (updates every 6÷24 hours) are available there if you only want to browse them, instead.

There is also an email-based interface for users of our list; you can get info about using it by sending a message with just the word `help’ as subject or in the body, to

virtualboximage-support-request at lists.sourceforge.net

The support page has been updated to reflect the change.

We now accept donations

If you wish, you can donate us a few bucks. At the moment, they would be used for:

  • getting a second-level domain name: 9,50 € / 15 $ per year
  • new hardware provisions: what is available

The PayPal button is there for you to use. Thank you in advance.

Say hi to a new project contributor + administrator

Here comes Calogero, who’s providing the images published in the last few days.

A warning to (Windows) users

I have received some reports about troubles loading the images. Here are some things you may want to try (please, please, please let me know if they worked):

  • Use the latest version of VirtualBox available. Don’t stick with older releases if you can upgrade.
  • If you are using Windows, using the .xml virtual machine descriptor I provide seems pretty impossible. Re-creating the virtual machine through the VirtualBox wizard after having registered the hard disk image seems to help a bit.

I haven’t access to a Windows machine for testing. I need reports from you to try to find a fix to those annoying troubles.

Testers wanted, and pocket donations

Hi there. I’m in the process of preparing several new images - one of them should be, at last, OpenSUSE 10.0, and a fixed FreeDOS 1.0 one.
As I have time, I would like to receive some more feedback, especially from Windows users: there are reportedly troubles in the steps to follow to load images, or simply I’ve done wrong assumptions.

The title also talks about donations: we are not in a hurry about that, but as this site is getting “hotter”, I would like to buy a second-level domain; I had planned to do that sometime during the next summer, but if you have some spare bucks and want to use them, it’s time to stop wondering how to :-) :

  • Register to WordPress.com, and log in.
  • In your Global Dashboard, click on Updates (the last link on the right in the menu bar), and then on Gifts. Set the username to gsdefender, and choose how much you want to send me.
  • Domain buyout + setup costs 15$. If you live in the E.U., you should have a “fair” ;-) conversion rate.

    Stay tuned.

Puppy Linux image by Johann Loefflmann

Yesterday I received an e-mail by Johann Loefflmann. Johann has installed Puppy Linux 3.01 on a VirtualBox® image and wanted me to share it with you. Johann wrote:

Hi Emanuele,
my name is Johann and I’m from Germany. I found your page quite useful!

I have created instructions how to install Puppy Linux 3.01 in a Virtualbox. See also http://www.jonelo.de/os/how-to-install-puppy-linux-3.01-on-virtualbox.txt
An actual Virtual machine can be downloaded from http://www.jonelo.de/java/bigal/#Download.
Why? Go to http://www.jonelo.de/java/bigal/index.html#virtual if you would like to know my motivation for that task. Feel free to use my instructions or the machine for your project :-)

This image includes BigAl, a piece of Java software written by Johann that does complex calculations. Someone might find interesting to use.

The project isn’t dead

Some of my boxes are, though.
I’m in the process of replacing them with some spare hardware. Please be patient.
